Why Shop for Prom in November?? - By: Nancy Fallat, 2007-11-02
Fall has hardly come, and the winter season has not crossed anyone's minds. You are settling into your school routine- homework, extra-curricular activities, sports practices, tests, etc. Besides college planning, the thought of spring hasn't entered your mind. Why would you even be thinking about a prom dress for next year? What many prom-goers don't know is that the best selection is available before the new year. Most prom dresses meant for the following spring season are shipped to stores by the manufacturers in October. By the time the prom magazines hit the shelves in December, many people have already ordered the more popular prom dress styles. Where do they find these new fashions that haven't even been published in the magazines yet? They shop on the internet. Many internet retailers will add the new spring styles to their websites, as soon as manufacturers' photos become available in October. However, you're probably thinking, "My prom doesn't happen until May! Surely, March will be early enough?" It's early enough only if you are flexible in the styles and colors you will be happy with. If you are set on a specific style, especially a popular one, you will likely be disappointed if you wait too long. By the end of winter, most of the popular dress styles of the season will be either completely sold out, or on deep backorder. Why should this be the case? The main reason for that is, prom dresses are a very seasonal product. A manufacturer will cut a set number of dresses in the summer for the following spring prom season, and will begin delivering them to stores in October. Due to early orders, they may make more cuts of the best selling styles, perhaps even during February and March. By that time, stores will already have orders in hand for the styles that were so popular, they had to be re-cut. After that, the manufacturers do not make any more prom dresses. What good is a plethora of unused, unsold prom dress inventory during the summer? The only exception is when the style is carried over for fall homecoming, however, they are still usually not available until summer. Popular prom dresses may be on backorder or sold out by February, because of added demand from formal events in December, January, and February. Many of the prom dresses go for these other events, simply because they're already available. Additionally, prom dresses are sold not only in the United States, but all over the world. A great number of online prom dress retailers sell their products worldwide. The competition for the hottest dresses is fierce. Proms that are held early in the season are another reason to start shopping early. In some parts of the country, proms are scheduled as early as February. Not everyone's prom rolls around in April or May. Some schools, though rare, hold their proms as early as mid-December! Every year, amazingly, shoppers in April are disappointed that we don't have the dress they are looking for, the one they saw in the prom magazines that were published in December. Waiting until February or March is the time to shop, only if you don't have a specific style or color you want. But if you have a specific dress in mind, or you are more selective in your prom dress choice, you should seriously consider shopping in November/December. If you don't know what you would like, you can go on the Internet in October and get some idea of what style you want. Don't hesitate when you find your perfect style - get it!
